1.0 Role Purpose
As a key contributor within Kirby’s multi-disciplinary engineering, construction, and digital construction teams, the Structural Design Engineer will support the design, coordination, and delivery of structural engineering elements across projects. The role focuses on integrating structural design with MEP installations, ensuring safety, quality, and compliance throughout the project lifecycle.
While third-party consultants will retain responsibility for design sign-off and Professional Indemnity insurance, the Structural Design Engineer will produce detailed structural calculations, contribute to design reviews, and support project execution from tender through to handover.
2.0 Structural Engineer Key Responsibilities
The Structural Design Engineer will play an integral role in supporting Kirby’s project delivery, working collaboratively with internal teams and external stakeholders. From the early stages of tendering through to project handover, the Structural Design Engineer will contribute technical expertise, design insight, and coordination support to ensure structural elements are safe, compliant, and seamlessly integrated with MEP systems.

In conjunction with the Kirby project team, the Structural Design Engineer will be responsible for the execution of structural engineering activities during various project stages as follows:
Design and Analysis:
· Engage in Pre-Construction activities to assess the structural elements of the MEP installation, including reviewing primary and secondary structural provisions included to provide structural support for the proposed MEP Installation.
· Contribute to the production of Design Review Reports at Pre-Construction Stage, on projects.
· Develop detailed designs for structural elements based on project specifications and requirements.
· Perform structural analysis using appropriate software to ensure structural elements can withstand applied loads and environmental conditions.
· Complete design risk assessments in the course of the production of structural engineering designs.
· Consider material selection, taking into account factors such as strength, corrosion resistance, and durability.
Code Compliance:
· Ensure that structural engineering designs comply with relevant building codes, standards, and regulations.
· Stay updated on industry standards and code changes to incorporate them into designs.
Collaboration:
· Work closely with Kirby Digital Construction, Engineering, and Operations to integrate structural engineering designs seamlessly into overall project plans.
· Collaborate with manufacturers to ensure the feasibility of structural elements fabrication and installation.
Team Leadership:
· Support the Project and Design Managers to ensure the overall successful delivery of design and engineering activities on the project
· Attend monthly or weekly meetings with the Line and Functional Manager to ensure ongoing improvements and developments and to review KPI progress.
· Support the development of graduate and junior structural engineers
Cost Management:
· Develop cost-effective structural element designs while maintaining structural integrity.
· Provide input during the material procurement process to balance cost considerations with performance requirements.
Documentation:
· Assist with the preparation of detailed engineering drawings, schedules, calculations and specifications for structural elements.
· Create documentation that clearly communicates design intent and requirements to fabrication teams and contractors.
Process Improvement and Integration:
· Produce Technical Alerts / Notes, for circulation to wider project teams, as part of our continuous improvement process.
Quality Control:
· Monitor and inspect structural elements, fabrication and installation details to ensure compliance with approved designs and industry standards.
Problem Solving:
· Address and resolve any issues related to structural elements that may arise during the design, fabrication, or construction phases.
· Provide innovative solutions to challenges that may impact the structural integrity of structural elements.
Safety:
· Prioritise safety considerations in the design of structural elements to ensure that structures are safe for occupants and the public.
3.0 Line Manager Responsibilities
The Structural Design Engineer will report to the Line Manager on day-to-day related activities.
The Line Manager will oversee the Structural Design Engineer’s daily activities, task assignments, performance management, and cultural values alignment. Responsibilities include:
· Ensure that Kirby’s culture and values are consistently demonstrated in day-to-day work, team interactions, and decision-making.
· Providing support and direction on daily and weekly tasks.
· Assigning and reviewing daily/weekly tasks.
· Providing feedback and quality assurance on deliverables.
· Approving leave and timesheets.
· Conducting annual performance reviews in collaboration with the Function Manager.
4.0 Functional Manager Responsibilities
The Function Manager will guide the Structural Design Engineer’s professional development and alignment with Kirby’s engineering standards. Responsibilities include:
· Supporting training, professional registrations, and continuous learning.
· Leading process improvement initiatives.
· Participating in recruitment and capability development.
· Driving technical excellence and innovation across the engineering function.
· Conducting annual performance reviews.
· Clearly defining Key Performance Indicators (KPIs), measuring performance, assessing outcomes, and providing structured feedback.
