Role Purpose
We are seeking an experienced Design Manager with a strong background in data centre design and construction. The Design Manager will oversee the planning, coordination, and execution of civil, structural, and architectural designs for large-scale data centres. The successful candidate will work closely with multi-disciplinary teams, including MEP (Mechanical, Electrical, and Plumbing) engineers, contractors, and clients to deliver world-class data centre facilities.
  
Design Manager Responsibilities
In conjunction with your project team, you will be responsible for the execution of various stages of a project as follows:
  
Design Management:

  • Lead the design development of civil, structural, and architectural aspects for data centre projects.
  • Manage the design process from concept to detailed design, ensuring compliance with data centre standards (e.g., Uptime Institute Tier standards) and local building codes.
  • Coordinate design activities with engineering teams, contractors, and other stakeholders to ensure integrated solutions across disciplines.
  • Ensure designs are sustainable, scalable, and optimized for energy efficiency, security, and cooling performance.

  
Project Coordination:

  • Collaborate with project managers and stakeholders to define project goals, scope, budget, and timeline.
  • Manage relationships with architects, engineers, contractors, and external consultants.
  • Attend regular project meetings, provide design input, and update stakeholders on the progress of design deliverables.
  • Identify and mitigate design risks, providing solutions to overcome potential design challenges.

  
Technical Expertise:

  • Ensure structural integrity and resilience of the data centre to meet seismic, wind, and fire resistance standards.
  • Oversee the integration of advanced architectural solutions to enhance the data centre’s operational efficiency and functionality.
  • Ensure that designs meet the required standards for security, including physical barriers, access control, and surveillance.
  • Manage the design of critical infrastructure, including foundation, roofing, and flooring systems for heavy equipment, raised floors, and containment systems.

  
Compliance & Quality Control:

  • Ensure that all designs adhere to local and international regulations, including building codes, fire safety standards, and environmental requirements.
  • Perform quality control reviews on design deliverables to ensure accuracy, functionality, and adherence to specifications.
  • Work closely with the HSE (Health, Safety, and Environment) teams to ensure that designs prioritize safety.

  
Documentation & Reporting:

  • Maintain thorough documentation of design decisions, modifications, and approvals.
  • Prepare regular reports on design progress, identifying potential delays and proposing mitigation strategies.
  • Ensure all design deliverables are completed on time, within budget, and meet quality standards.

  
Stakeholder Management:

  • Act as the main point of contact for all CSA design-related matters within the project.
  • Communicate effectively with clients to ensure that their requirements are met, and manage expectations around design solutions.

  
Other Duties:

  • Maintain a site diary.
  • Assist QS in his / her duties
  • Ensure company’s good image is maintained at all times.
  • Integrate with site team.
  • Ensure your agreed training plan is enforced.

  
Necessary requirement of the Design Manager
  

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Civil Engineering, Structural Engineering, Architecture, or a related field.
  • 10+ years of experience in CSA design management, with at least 5 years focused on data centre projects.
  • Extensive knowledge of data centre infrastructure, design standards and construction best practices.
  • Strong project management skills, including the ability to manage budgets, timelines, and multi-disciplinary teams.
  • Excellent understanding of building codes, fire safety regulations, and environmental requirements for data centres.
  • Experience with BIM (Building Information Modelling) and other design software (AutoCAD, Revit, etc.).
  • Professional Acumen – Represent Kirby’s at a senior level in meetings, presentations, technical workshops, etc. in a professional, competent and capable manner.
  • Communications – A strong communicator with excellent verbal and writing proficiency. Ability to lead presentations to larger audiences.
  • Planning and Organising – An organised and adaptable individual with a flexible approach to work. Ability to manage and prioritise when leading multiple projects. 
  • Deep understanding of constructability of projects.
  • Strong Commercial awareness.
  • Capable of building strategic relationships with third party design groups.
  • Ability to work on own initiative and build and manage a team.

  
Desired competencies / special role requirements
  

  • Certification in data centre design (e.g., CDCDP, CDCMP).
  • Experience working with Tier III and Tier IV data centre facilities.
  • Proven track record of managing large-scale, complex data centre projects.
  • Familiarity with sustainable design practices and green building certifications (LEED, BREEAM).
