With a background in architecture and Building Information Modelling (BIM), Pinar Kabaoglu is at the forefront of Kirby’s efforts to advance industry practices through the adoption of the latest techniques and technologies.

She joined Kirby in 2023 and, in her role as Information Manager, is responsible for creating consistency and standardisation in how construction information is produced, managed and controlled across the company.

Pinar’s role is key to ensuring that project teams have a single, reliable and structured source of information to work from. By managing our common data environment and aligning how information is created and controlled, teams have consistent and timely access to the correct information – with the appropriate permission levels – regardless of their location or discipline.

“Standardised information not only improves day-to-day collaboration, but it also increases the long-term value of our data. When information is produced in a consistent way, it can be analysed more effectively, turning project experience into insight that can be shared across the business and applied on future projects,” she explains.

Journey to Kirby

Pinar initially studied to be an architect and practised for a number of years in her home country of Turkey. Seeing the rapid technical advancements in the sector, she took the decision to take a year out and complete a master’s degree in Global BIM Management in Barcelona, Spain, in 2019. It was after graduation that she moved into the engineering and construction sector, working as a BIM Manager in Istanbul on a large data centre project.

Moving to Ireland and working for Kirby, she’s now supporting teams across the world to maintain our lead in information management, while also spearheading the adoption of new technology, creating structured data systems, and rolling out advancements after testing and validation.

“We recently advanced our digital delivery capabilities by introducing custom commissioning tools,” she explains.

Co-developed by Pinar and our technology solutions provider Symetri, the tools work with Autodesk Construction Cloud (ACC) to streamline asset workflows by automating checklist generation, enabling one-click test pack creation and providing real-time progress reporting to project management teams.

“By removing manual data handling, the tools have made our processes significantly more efficient, as well as supporting consistent, audit-ready handovers. We’re now moving toward the next automation phase, where engineering schedule data will automatically populate checklist fields, further enhancing accuracy and efficiency,” she explains.

Data management: Leading, training and maintaining

“Everything we do in this space is tested, measured and rolled out in a controlled way,” says Pinar, who works closely with Document Controllers and site teams. “New processes and technology launches often fail without a dedicated training plan and a consistent drumbeat of guidance and support.”

We ask Pinar what sets Kirby apart in this space. “Investment,” she says. “Our leadership has been preparing for this point for a number of years and has invested consistently in the right technologies to support quality, safety, delivery and value for our clients.

“Here, digitalisation initiatives – with information management as a core component – are viewed as value drivers rather than compliance requirements. That mindset is important, and it’s what sets us apart.

“Every single one of our projects is delivered in line with international industry standards, often exceeding baseline requirements to provide long-term benefits for both our clients and our people. As part of this continuous improvement, emerging technologies also play an important role in how we support delivery across our projects.”

Driving the industry forward

Pinar is not sitting still, and with a thirst for learning – she has two master’s degrees – she’s committed to staying ahead of industry innovations. “I have always been driven by knowledge, and in this industry in particular you have to stay ahead and maintain your drive to improve. Robotics, for example, is a particularly interesting area of advancement, especially where millimetre‑critical environments demand absolute precision. These technologies, when applied in the right way, directly support our goals around safety, quality and predictable delivery.”

“An increased use of off-site manufacturing is another area we are seeing significant gains for our clients, with many aspects of our work already analysed for efficiencies. Off-site manufacturing is not only safer, but can improve quality, sustainability and programme certainty. We will always work with clients to evaluate the benefits across all projects at pre-construction stage. Often people are surprised by the capabilities that already exist in this space,” she ends.

The programme offers the opportunity to kick-start careers in engineering and gain exciting international experience with excellent opportunities for career development and progression.

“I have found so many similarities with playing sport. At Kirby we wear one jersey, we are a team. It’s an environment where you can flourish, and I hope to do so for many years to come,” Darren finishes.

As we speak to Stephen, he’s about to settle down with his family to watch the Toy Show on RTÉ. On this family occasion, and many before it, Stephen’s family will welcome Lynn and her children – a family the DIY SOS team helped as part of The Big Build in 2022.

Her story is like many supported through the show. Lynn, the wife of Johnny Aylward and full-time carer to her son, applied to the show to secure an accessible, adapted home after Johnny’s motor neurone disease diagnosis. It’s a project close to Stephen’s heart.

“Johnny was incredible. He was a pleasure to be around, and so incredibly grateful for everything we did. We became very close friends with him and his whole family,” says Stephen.

Johnny sadly passed away in 2023.

DIY SOS: The Big Build Ireland airs on Raidió Teilifís Éireann (RTÉ), Ireland’s national public broadcaster for radio, TV, and online content. Headed by Baz Ashmawy and his team, the show renovates the homes of deserving families, changing their lives forever. With only nine days to transform each home, the projects depend on the generosity of volunteers and firms like Kirby.

Stephen remains close to many of the families supported through the show, with some returning to help on subsequent builds; making coffee, painting, and giving back to the programme that has transformed lives across Ireland.

“The producers are choosing the families for next year. It’s a job I couldn’t do. I couldn’t bear to let people down if they aren’t picked,” he adds.

For Stephen, this is his fifth year supporting the show in his role with Kirby. He estimates he’s worked on more than 20 projects, with the support of volunteers, the Kirby team, the supply chain, and local suppliers.

“The volunteers amaze me,” he says. “They can be there from eight in the morning to well into the early hours and just keep going. Without them we simply couldn’t get the jobs done.”

“You meet the best, most kind-hearted people,” he adds.

Stephen wasn’t long into his journey with Kirby when the opportunity to get involved presented itself. Now he balances his time between the show and his role as Site Manager across projects in the West of Ireland, working from his home in Glinsk, County Galway.

“I am proud to be part of a company that does so much good.”

Kirby supports DIY SOS projects with the electrical works package, which can include anything from rewiring a home to installing complex home automation technology. The team has nine days to complete each project, but Stephen always returns in the weeks and months afterward to make sure everything is working as it should.

“Seeing the families again after the big reveal is one of the most rewarding parts of my role,” he explains. “Simple things become easier; things that we take for granted, like showering or getting in and out of bed. Before the show, simple tasks like these could take hours. DIY SOS transforms their lives and makes things that little bit easier in lives full of struggle.”

Earlier this year, another call came to Stephen. Through Kirby’s long-standing connection with the GAA, we heard about Joe Slattery, a young athlete from Co. Clare who sustained a life-changing injury while training at an U16 GAA session. Joe now requires lifelong care.

Stephen took up that call and is now coordinating and project managing the adaptation of Joe’s home in Corofin.

“Kirby, together with the wider community and our supply chain partners, is committed to ensuring Joe’s home meets his care needs so that funds raised can go directly toward his ongoing support,” says Stephen, who leads the project with support from our Executive Director, Mark Flanagan, and Group Operations Director, Mikey Ryan.

“We are currently ahead of schedule with this project. We want to hand the home back to the family before Joe’s 18th birthday in April.”

With home automation and voice activation, the latest technology will give Joe the ability to access the whole house with ease. ‘Joe’s area’ providing his own space – giving him independence.

Strength in the face of adversity is something that Stephen sees on every project. Julian Benson’s ‘Room to Improve’ special on RTÉ similarly called on our team to support the creation of Tranquility House, a “home away from home” for Irish cystic fibrosis (CF) patients and families needing treatment in Dublin. Kirby answered and led the electrical fit-out that transformed the Georgian House.

Stephen is not someone who sits still. He’s also coaching Kirby’s Inter-Firm GAA football team. “We have the semi-final after Christmas, with many of the young lads playing for us this year. We won the Junior All-Ireland last year, so there’s a lot of pressure to bring the cup home,” he laughs.

Playing in the team is Stephen’s son, who joined Kirby as an apprentice last year. “Kirby does so much good. A lot of it people never hear about. Kirby is like that; hardworking and dedicated, while giving back to the community in droves, whether that’s through training the next generation or through projects like DIY SOS. The team culture is like no other,” he concludes.

To watch the DIY SOS: The Big Build Ireland back, tune in to the RTÉ Player to watch the latest episodes.

Every October, our industry focuses in on safety, and for two weeks this year, our teams will go “Back to Basics” as part of the CIF Safety Campaign.

In this #PeopleFirst, we interview Luka Putrić, Senior EHS Advisor on our high-profile data centre project in London. He tells us what it means to lead in safety and explores the unique approach Kirby has developed to coach and empower its people.

Zero Harm: Leadership in Safety

“We are not asking and telling, we are supporting and training,” says Luka when we ask what sets Kirby’s approach to safety apart. “Kirby’s approach to continuously driving safety is different compared to others.

“We do it naturally. We support people to make sure they are not alone, making sure that safety becomes part of their daily habit.”

“My role is here to guide and support, not to shout and dictate,” he says.

Luka joined Kirby three years ago from the renewables sector. With a degree in Safety and Protection Engineering he’s been working in the specialism for 10 years.

He initially joined us in Milan, and his career has now brought him to London, where he is working on a Kirby’s next-generation data centre project as it moves into the commissioning stage.

Kirby’s Zero Harm programme takes a comprehensive approach to enhancing safety and performance, encompassing eight core leading indicators, including engagement, communication, skills and wills, and leadership.

These indicators serve as fundamental pillars in the pursuit of improved safety and operational excellence.

A Day in the Life of an EHS Advisor

Luka’s day typically starts with a 7am pre-start meeting. The team runs through the daily plan, updates the whiteboard with high-risk activities, and highlights any new changes on site.

Inductions follow. “Every single person working for Kirby will wear our PPE after their induction. We explain what that means and what we expect of them in terms of leading in safety,” he adds.

Luka will then walk the site: “Zero Harm is designed as a two-way programme, with listening built in as standard. It is designed to evolve naturally, rather than being imposed on our people, and they are integral to its integration, adoption, and evolution.”

“Spotter and working at height training have been particularly important for this site given the type of work we are carrying out,” says Luka, who supports the team, engineers, and subcontractors to design risk out of activities on site, as well as delivering training and completing risk assessments.

CIF Safety Campaign

We ask what the team in London will focus on as part of the CIF Safety Campaign. Luka explains “We will look at recurring tasks together, including risks and hazards.

“We are working on the mechanical aspect at the moment on site, so pressure testing and lifting operations with the crane and chain blocks are a key area of attention. There are various initiatives and sessions organised on that to make sure there is no complacency.”

“As part of the Construction Industry Federation’s (CIF) Back to Basics campaign, an initiative focused on reinforcing safety and health standards across the construction sector – Kirby Group Engineering continues to invest in cultivating the next generation of EHS professionals.

“One standout example of this commitment is Luka Putrić, a Senior EHS Advisor who has been with Kirby for over three years. Luka exemplifies the qualities of a well-rounded, forward-thinking safety leader. His work on complex projects in Milan and London has consistently demonstrated his ability to navigate high-pressure environments while upholding the highest standards of compliance and safety.

“Throughout the full lifecycle of each project, Luka has shown remarkable drive and ambition not only in advancing his own career within Kirby, but also in supporting the development of others. His mentorship of junior team members has helped foster a culture of accountability and continuous learning, ensuring that safety remains a shared responsibility across every site.”

Ryan Scott, Kirby Senior EHS Manager, ROI/UK

Coaching the Team on Site

“The strong collaboration and positive experience on site often lead subcontracted labour to want to return, and many have taken that experience to improve other projects. There’s also a strong focus on development within both the trade and specific roles, with clear opportunities to grow and progress within the wider group,” adds Luka.

Life in London

It’s not all work. Luka is keen to emphasise the team bonding opportunities, “We have set up a five-a-side soccer match once a week in Shepherds Bush with the client and subcontractors on site. It’s relaxed and we have good craic.

“There’s equality there on the pitch – just like on site – we are one team, cheering each other on.”

We asked Ella and Sarah to share their experience of our graduate and apprenticeship programmes, as young people across Ireland and the UK commit to the next steps in their education or training.

Here, they share their stories, advice, and tips for those looking to following in their footsteps.

Ella Peare is a Graduate Electrical Engineer. She joined Kirby full-time in 2024 from South East Technological University (SETU) in Waterford, Ireland.

“My journey with Kirby Group Engineering began with a three-month summer internship on a project in Zurich, Switzerland.” She later applied for and was one of the first recipients of our women in engineering scholarships in 2022.

This was followed by an eight-month student placement that saw her split her time between Zurich and Milan. “I was later offered a place on the Graduate Programme in 2024, with a full-time position as an Electrical Engineer in Milan, Italy,” she adds.

Sarah Mannion is a second year Electrical and Instrumentation Apprentice. She joined Kirby in 2023 and is now working on a high-profile pharmaceutical engineering project in Ireland, alongside completing assessments and training as part of the four-year programme. She will be attending her first college phase in October.

What is one piece of advice you would give someone making a decision on the route to take after their leaving certificate or GCSEs?

Ella: Choosing a career path can be challenging. My advice to anyone feeling uncertain is to talk to friends and family. They know you well, understand your interests, and they might suggest a career path or sector you hadn’t considered before. I’d also recommend attending career fairs or talks hosted by school or local colleges, these are incredibly valuable events, often with current students available to share their experiences and insights on the course work or projects.

Sarah: I’d say if you’re unsure of what you’d like to do, don’t rush into anything. There’s a lot of pressure to go to college. I went and it wasn’t for me. I tried many different things, and I eventually decided on my apprenticeship. You can always take a gap year and take your time to figure it out

Kirby Group Engineering announced four bursaries to female engineering students in 2022. Pictured (l:r): Rosa Condori, Zofia Suchan, Alison Cahill and Ella Peare

What made you apply for the route you did?

Sarah: I applied for my apprenticeship as I’d seen my dad and uncle work all their lives as carpenters. I knew I didn’t want to do that, but I wanted to work with my hands. I really like maths and physics, so I figured electrical engineering would be a good fit. I did a few days with an electrician in domestic work so I could get a small grasp on the basics. I loved it and have learned so much since starting with Kirby.

Ella: In secondary school I wasn’t sure what I wanted to do with my career, until someone suggested engineering. I’ve always enjoyed figuring out how things work, so engineering felt like a natural fit, something that just made sense for me. I found a college course in SETU that offered a common entry engineering option. It allowed me to discover five disciplines of engineering both in the built environment (civil and sustainable) and engineering technology (electrical, electronic and automation) in my first year. I ultimately chose electrical engineering to major in for my final three years.

Could you tell us bit about your training programme?

Ella: I am currently on the 2024 Kirby graduate programme; this is a fantastic programme for new mechanical and electrical engineers, providing a broad understanding of various aspects of engineering that we’ll encounter throughout our careers. As part of my graduate programme, I am required to produce 10 reports – eight of these will be mandatory topics such as lighting, containment, earthing and cabling, and the final two on topics of my choice. I’ll also have short placements with other departments such as EHS, Commercial, Planning and Procurement. These rotations allow us to appreciate the collaborative effort required to bring a project to life.

Sarah: The apprenticeship is made up of seven phases. Phases 1,3,5, and 7 are on-site training, while phases 2,4, and 6 are classroom-based. I’ve found I get the most benefit from learning on-site as I’m a visual learner.

Would you recommend it to others?

Sarah: I’d definitely recommend an apprenticeship to anyone. I was honestly surprised at how much I liked it. I was worried, being a girl, that I might face challenges working in a male-dominated industry, but everyone has been so nice and treats you the same as anyone else. People just want you to learn and understand you’re just starting out. If anyone’s thinking about an apprenticeship, I’d say just give it a go.

Ella: Absolutely. I’d recommend a career at Kirby to anyone considering working in engineering. The opportunities for growth and development are next level both during the graduate programme and long into a senior engineer position.

What has been the favourite bit to date?

Ella: I don’t think I would be able to pick a single favourite moment from my time with Kirby so far. On my journey to date, I have had to chance to meet and work alongside some amazing people who have all helped, supported and thought me invaluable information, getting me to the engineer I am today. I’ve also been fortunate to live and work in beautiful European cities, which has been an amazing experience both professionally and personally.

Sarah: My favourite part of the apprenticeship is being active and moving all day. I’m not great at sitting still, so I enjoy working towards a goal.

Why should people consider a career in engineering?

Ella: Engineering is a very rewarding career. Watching large-scale projects evolve from ideas on a paper to fully operational facilities is incredibly satisfying; this is especially true in a world that is constantly changing and innovating.

Sarah: Engineering is essential to our daily lives and can improve people’s quality of life. There are so many branches of engineering that, if you’re in any way interested at all, you’re sure to find something that suits you.

It’s amazing really,” she says.

Michelle is one of many who represent Kirby at its best – welcoming people to our offices, to our teams and into the wider company.
“One of the best parts of my job is helping people settle in. We are lucky to be joined by people from across the world who work on our projects.
Outside of work Michelle is part of a running group. “I don’t think I’d have the courage to go out on my own, but love being part of the group, it really pushes us all along,” she adds.

Michael’s life has been shaped by energy and infrastructure. Growing up in the shadow of the peat-fired power station in Lanesboro, County Longford, from those very early years, his working life and education have been dedicated to advancing technologies in the engineering, power and renewables industry.

A trained civil engineer, Michael Murray now has overall responsibility for Kirby’s Power and Renewables business, as well as Group Business Development across Ireland, mainland Europe and the UK. Working closely with our CEO Henry McCann, he is heavily involved in developing the business unit’s strategic direction and aligning it with Kirby’s objectives and purpose.

Michael has a longstanding connection with Kirby. In 2010, he joined to lead the UK business as Managing Director, growing the division with offices in London and Glasgow, across the data centre, pharmaceutical and life sciences, and power sectors. After four years with us, he ran a company in the energy and renewables space back in Ireland. He rejoined us in 2021.

Our Power and Renewables business continues to go from strength to strength. We support our clients through longstanding framework agreements and serve our existing and new data centre and life sciences clients with substation design and build services. More recently, our expansion into delivering battery energy storage systems (BESS) projects – complementing our solar and wind projects – has seen Kirby take a leadership position in the renewable energy and utility grid connection sector.

Kirby delivered ESB’s €9 million Poolbeg BESS project in Ireland.

People with purpose: Leading and developing a world-class team

“Our success is down to our talented team and putting people first,” Michael states. “And a huge part of my role is ensuring our clients’ expectations are consistently exceeded and our teams are empowered and supported to execute projects at the leading edge of engineering,” he explains.

As we speak, Michael is heading to our Inverurie office in Scotland to support our team delivering complex projects for SSE Networks and Scottish Power.

Through his role, he and his team are playing a significant role in the energy transition and the decarbonisation of the grid. “The energy landscape is ever changing and evolving, and our work puts our team front and centre at a pivotal point in history,” Michael says.

The Inverurie office (near Aberdeen) is one of several across the UK and Ireland that are working on utility grid transmission and distribution projects for solar, battery storage and onshore wind projects. Alongside our Glasgow and Irish offices, the teams are responsible for a growing market which in the past couple of years has doubled in turnover.

“Our Power and Renewables business is and has been a cornerstone of Kirby’s core offering for over 25 years. We have worked hard to build a skillset that offers real value to our clients here in Ireland and internationally. This requires a focus on continual training and development for our teams, which has always been a factor of life at Kirby. We don’t stand still here; we’re always learning and taking the next step towards what we can achieve together. We are always committed to finding new, more efficient and greener ways to achieve our goals and those of our clients,” he adds.

Scottish Power awarded Kirby a place on its £5.4 billion framework, which will run for an initial five years, with the option to extend up to 10.

Journey to Kirby

“I am originally from County Longford, and I was surrounded by farming and Lough Ree, with the Lanesboro ESB peat power station and Bord Na Móna the big employers in the area. I grew up on a farm and was fortunate to get student summer work with Bord na Móna from milling and harvesting the peat on the bogs, to fixing rail lines for the trains to transport the peat to the power station, with plenty of time spent in their workshops. It was those early experiences that inspired me to go to university to complete a civil engineering degree in Belfast. I wasn’t sure what the best career path to be taking was at that time,” says Michael, who spent a one-year placement in the construction industry in Australia as a project manager as part of his degree qualification.

“That year helped form who I am now. It was a great opportunity to travel and see the world from a different perspective. I’d encourage anyone to explore opportunities abroad as part of their development, it’s a unique experience that can accelerate your thinking and career, with plenty of challenges overcome along the way.”

With a passion for business and a curiosity for learning, Michael’s roles varied from a part-time telesales job selling Dell computers in his final year of university, to seven years at KONE, initially as a Project Manager and then becoming their National Sales and Engineering Director. A role as a director for a construction company followed, where he completed a part-time MBA, before he joined Kirby to support their expansion plans in the UK.

Making connections

Other recent project awards are securing Kirby’s reputation in the sector.

Kirby was recently awarded a large battery storage project in Nottingham, UK. Michael explains, “We have built a reputation for world-class delivery in this space and will continue to develop, innovate and lead as the world looks to net zero.
